Learn About Ponce History

Ponce was founded in 1692 by Juan Ponce de León's great-grandson - Loíza Ponce de León. Ponce was Spain's capital of the southern region until it fell to the U.S. in 1898. Ponce is often referred to as La Perla del Sur (The Pearl of the South), La Ciudad Señorial (The Manorial City) and La Ciudad de las Quenepas (Genip City). Ponce was always regarded as one of the most elegant towns, distinguished for buildings with Neoclassical Colonial lines. For a few decades, it began losing its radiance; the economic troubles of the island caused many families to leave the city and small businesses to close, leaving many buildings and homes abandoned. In the past year, the community is making an effort to revive the city; the urban city is looking brighter, more colorful, cleaner and cheerful.
