Aguada is a fairly large city with a population of more than 42 000 people spread out over an area of approximately 78 square kilometers. The city has approximately 17 wards excluding the administrative center of the city, which is known as ‘Aguada Pueblo’. The city may not be at the top of the average tourist’s list of places to go, but it does have some interesting attractions such as the Ermita Espinar Ruins. The Aguada Museum located in an old railroad station building and allows visitors to browse through a variety of artifacts left behind by the Taino Indian settlers. Some of these historical artifacts include items from the Taíno Indians who in the past used to populated this area.

Learn About Aguada History

Aguada was founded in 1510 with the name of Villa de Sotomayor by Cristóbal de Sotomayor, and under orders from Juan Ponce de León. Since then, Aguada is known as La Villa de Sotomayor (Sotomayor's village). The city is also known as La Ciudad Del Descubrimiento, as it is popularly held that Christopher Columbus landed in Aguada when he discovered Puerto Rico in November 1493. But there is no exact documentation about this fact.
