This is the great, pristine, natural and beautiful Playa Pelícano (Pelican Beach). Playa Pelícano is located in the Isla Caja de Muerto, a small island in the sea waters on the south of Ponce city. Isla Caja de Muertos is a Natural Reserve, meaning that there is no commercial interference and all you would find here is a small paradise with one the best beaches in Puerto Rico. Playa Pelícano is awarded more than five times with the prestigious Blue Flag, do to the great maintenance of the beach, facilities and water testing.
Now be ready to see the amazing crystal clear waters, totally aqua light blue color, some schools of fish and a lot of white sands. Is the water the main event here, the visibility is so good that there is no need for a snorkeling mask. This is a wonderful place to do snorkeling or diving, being a reserve just make it an attraction with a lot of sea life and some coral reefs to explore, it is just a must to come a see by your own eyes the Caribbean sea wonders. There is almost no waves, just calm sea waters and they are very shallows, making it perfect for kids.
Isla Caja de Muerto have some facilities and amenities from: composting bathrooms, gazebos, harbor, picnic tables, swimming designated area, a visitor center with a lot of information, hiking trails, an historic lighthouse, a Jagüey forest and a cave. On the opposite direction of the Playa Pelícano there is a great formation of coral reef, we only recommend this for scuba diving for the best and better enjoyment.
In order to visit Playa Pelícano there is no other way than just taking a boat. There is a charter boat company that do excursion trips to this beach located in La Guancha in Ponce. The ride would take from 30 - 40 minutes depending on weather conditions. Also you can rent some equipment like umbrellas and chairs from the charter boat company.
This is an amazing place that we recommend to visit and one of most tourist favorites. Is this kind of places that sticks to your mind when somebody just mention the Caribbean. Make this a must on your list!
